On Hire/Off Hire Survey

(One Day - Intermediate - Full)

It is very important for a client when hiring a vessel to limit their liability, by ensuring they have the correct information on the condition of the vessel and work required in respect of the Charter Party. Hence it is in the interest of a Client to get an independent survey carried out on their behalf which will then be used as evidence for their liabilities for the Charter period.

Remember – Money spent on surveys is money saved on your liabilities!

In order to assist a client we offer the following services that include a full report with photos.

One Day Survey

Vessel survey to get a general impression by inspecting selected areas;
●  Accommodation
●  Passenger areas
●  Safety equipment
●  Cargo areas
●  Machinery spaces etc
●  Planned Maintenance System for outstanding items
●  Sample of any prearranged open spaces (tanks etc).
●  Certification and Classification records to be inspected
●  Brief interviews with some of the crew members.

Note: Much of the information for this survey will need to be provided from the vessel's own print outs and records.
Part of the survey may be carried out at sea if the vessel is operational.

Intermediate Survey

As One Day Survey, plus:
●  Members of the crew will be interviewed in more depth, in order to gain an insight into the vessel's operating and procedural matters such as crew training and safety awareness.
●  Inspecting all certification
●  Spot checking the planned maintenance records as well as checking for overdue maintenance.
●  More in depth inspection of the passenger areas.

Note: Dependent on the vessel type and size, the time taken for this survey will vary, but it is expected that it would be 2-3 days + time to write the report.

Full Survey

As One Day Survey, plus:
●  Very detailed inspection to include surveys of ballast/void cargo spaces, machinery, passenger, crew areas as far as possible.
●  In depth check of the planned maintenance system – note this can take some time to fully understand. It includes a cross check for mistakes and inaccuracies entered into the system.
Note: Dependent on the vessel size and type, the time taken for this survey will vary.

Condition Surveys -

Hull, Machinery and Fit Out

When a client has a vessel on charter he would normally like to ensure that his asset is being well-maintained in accordance with the Charter Party. Carrying out Condition Surveys ensures that he can raise issues with the Charter before his vessel is returned and he can ensure it is ready for onward Charter again.

Normally an On Hire Survey would have been carried out at the beginning of a charter and then the Condition Surveys are carried out as agreed with the client.
Should EMSS not have carried out the initial On Hire survey, then we would recommend that the first Condition Survey we carry out is the same as a Full Survey in the On Hire section. (click for details)

Each survey will be supplied with a report and photos.

One Day Survey
As per the survey in the On/Off Hire section, but not recommended as it is important for the client to get as much useful information as possible in order to reduce his liabilities.

Intermediate Condition Survey
As per the One Day and to include specific areas of the vessel to be surveyed in detail.
We would recommend an agreement with a client to survey the vessel over at least one year and during this period at each survey we would carry out more detailed surveys of assessable areas of the vessel. At each survey a different area would have a more detailed inspection – the vessel can be advised by the owners before a survey is due, so as to prepare these areas.

Full condition Survey
To be carried out as per a Full On/Off Hire survey  (click for details)

Dry Dock Surveys

These would normally be requested by a client in conjunction with either On/Off Hire Surveys as part of a condition Survey, but we are pleased to carry them out as a separate Survey.

The survey may consist of the following on behalf of the owners;
Machinery item maintenance.
Damaged machinery items, or general condition as found.
Damage to the hull, or general condition as found.

Please contact us and advise your requirements.
